Omicron is only as good as the officers that lead it. If you
are interested in running for office, please look over the following
job descriptions and choose one that matches your abilities.
If you are a candidate for an office, you should be prepared
to make a two- or three-minute speech introducing yourself and
explaining why you are qualified for that office. You may hold
only one office but may run for as many as you wish. All elected officers will be required to attend the State Leadership Conference, usually held in late September or early October; the Regional Convention, held in February or March; and all local chapter meetings, held weekly or biweekly. Officers will be encouraged to attend the International Convention and Regional and International Honor Institutes, though attendance at those meetings is not required. They will be required to participate in officers planning sessions, called at the discretion of the president at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters, and in as many local chapter service projects as they can. Election of officers will be by a majority of those present at the specifically called elections each spring or at specially called elections should one or more offices fall vacant. In each election, if no candidate receives a majority, a run-off between the two candidates receiving the highest number of votes will be held. Officers will be elected for a one-year term, the term beginning with the spring initiation ceremony and lasting until the same ceremony the same year. Any student running for office accepts the responsibility for serving the entire length of his/her term unless an emergency occurs to prevent that service. If an officer misses more than three consecutive biweekly chapter meetings, consistently fails to carry out the duties of his/her office, or is found generally unfit to carry out the requirements of his/her office, as determined by a consensus of the remaining officers and advisors, his/her office will be declared vacant. If an officer resigns and other officers prefer not to move up or if an office is declared vacant, the chapter will hold a special election to fill the vacant office at the next regularly scheduled chapter meeting. All elected officers will sit at the head table at Phi Theta Kappa initiation banquets and participate in the ceremony. Ordinarily, the president and vice presidents will each give a brief speech describing some aspect of Phi Theta Kappas history or the local chapters projects or activities. They, and the secretary-treasurer, will also be presented with officers pins or similar gifts at the spring banquet. The local chapter will pay for these gifts and for all elected officers meals. |
