Welcome to Alpha Omicron

Nathan Chaney has been selected as a 2006 Coca Cola Scholar, a Phi Theta Kappa Leader of Promise Scholar, and a Texas Star Scholar.

Alpha Omicron proudly represented TJC at the 88th Phi Theta Kappa International Convention in Seattle, Washington.  This record-setting conference included three action-packed days of educational and leadership development opportunities and world-renowned speakers including former Secretary of State Madeline Albright and Emmy award winning journalist Cokie Roberts.

Speakers and programs served to introduce the 2006 – 2008 Honors Study Topic “Gold, Gods and Glory: The Global Dynamics of Power” and Phi Theta Kappa's new International Service Program, Operation Green: Improving Our Communities, a partnership with Keep America Beautiful.

Alpha Omicron was recognized as one of the Top 25 Service chapters in the nation.  Service Hallmark Awards are presented in recognition of superior community service programming for the chapter, campus, community and region, especially involvement with the American Cancer Society.

Alpha Omicron was named a 2006 Distinguished Chapter –
one of only 25 chapters recognized.

Nathan Chaney was named one of thirty Distinguished Chapter Members for 2006 and did an exemplary job representing our chapter as a candidate for Region II Vice President.

Krystal King was named a 2006 Distinguished Chapter Officer for her constant commitment to our chapter as Vice President of Service.

Sarah Mayfield was an integral part of the 2006 Distinguished Officer Team from Texas.  Only three Regional officer teams out of 29 were so honored.  Sarah represented the Alpha Omicron chapter as District III Vice President for Texas for 2005-2006.

Chris Lee was one of twenty outstanding Phi Theta Kappa members to be named a  2006 Guistwhite Scholar. Chris received a medal and $5000 scholarship to fund baccalaureate studies. Guistwhite Scholars are selected on the basis of academic excellence and participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs.

Advisor Gigi Delk moved to Vice-Chair of the Association of Chapter Advisors.

Our chapter was recently named as the 2006 Most Congenial Chapter in the Texas Region and a Texas Top Chapter at the Regional Convention in Austin.  Sarah Mayfield and Nathan Chaney was elected to the Texas Hall of Honor, and advisor Dennis Mayfield received the Horizon Award for Advisors.

The 2007 All-USA Academic Team program will recognize 60 outstanding two-year college students. The applicant pool has grown from around 500-600 in its early years to over 1500 applicants in 2006. First, Second, and Third Teams, each consisting of 20 members, will be selected. The 20 First Team members receive stipends of $2,500 each. All 60 members of the All- USA Academic Team and their colleges receive extensive national recognition through coverage in USA TODAY. Selection is based on nominations submitted by community college presidents, who received nomination materials in the fall. Phi Theta Kappa, USA TODAY, and the American Association of Community Colleges sponsor the All-USA Academic Team program annually. To be eligible, a student must post a minimum 3.25 cumulative GPA and be eligible to graduate with an associate degree.

We are proud to announce that Tyler Junior College had two students selected to the 2006 USA Today ALL-Academic Teams. Christopher Lee was named to the Second Team, and Sarah Mayfield was named to the Third Team.  http://scholarships.ptk.org/aaat/announce.htm
